There Is No Such Thing As Bad Food
All Food Is Just Food
It’s time to get out of the guilt-trip that the food we eat is “bad.” By definition, a healthy diet is one that provides the body with enough energy to complete its daily tasks. As humans have evolved over time, so has our knowledge of nutrition and health, but along with that has come an overload of information and diet trends. Let’s get back to basics and talk about what food we should really be eating.
Diets and “Bad Foods”
Feeling overwhelmed? You’re not alone. According to a study of 2000 British adults, the average person will try a shocking 126 diets throughout their lifetime. It seems every time we open our smartphone we are met with yet another opinion on which diet is really the best, accompanied by a before and after photo that has most definitely been edited. On top of that, upon asking our primary care doctors for guidance on nutrition, they often fail to provide the thorough advice we are seeking.
What Is Right For You?
So how do we really choose the right diet for ourselves? First, we must define our goals. Someone who wishes to lose weight will not want to eat the same foods as someone who is focused on building muscle mass. Of course, we probably don’t need somebody to tell us that eating foods high in sugar and fat are subject to cause weight gain, and that vegetables are, in general, good for our overall health, and processed foods are, in general, not so good. It’s a great starting point to focus on the basics before jumping into a strict regime.
Consistency With Food
The diet that will work for you is the one you stick to. It’s important to keep in mind the psychology behind habit building when addressing your diet. When compared in a variety of studies, almost all current diet trends produce a similar success rate when followed correctly. The contrary can be said that when not followed correctly, they have about the same failure rate. Regardless of what you are focused on in terms of dieting, the most important thing to consider is that your commitment is the driving force behind the results you see.
Food That Works Well With Your Body
Figure out what you like to eat, both in terms of what tastes good and what makes you feel good after eating. Keeping a food journal [idea for an article to hyperlink someday hmm?] may help you hold yourself accountable for following a routine, as well as help you figure out which foods our body responds to in different ways. You can then adjust your calorie intake based on your overall goals. No matter which diet you choose to follow, pairing it with regular physical activity, adequate hydration, and a consistent sleep cycle will vastly accentuate your progress.
Think Positive About Food!
Studies show that our attitudes around eating actually affect the way our bodies process food. Having a personal relationship with the foods we eat, such as preparing them ourselves, may even increase the amount of nutrition we’re absorbing from them. Rather than beating yourself up for your unhealthy cravings, it’s important to flip the narrative into being inspired by the idea of food and diet. The more positively we feel about the work we are doing for our bodies, the more motivated we will be to stick to our routines, and in turn, see much more significant results.
You Don’t Have To Do It Alone
Finally, consider working with a specialist. An educated nutritionist will likely be able to give you better advice than an influencer. As a professional chef who made the transition into a fitness and health focused career, I have learned a lot about nutrition over the years. I am always available for private consultations to help weed out the overwhelming advice you may find online, and figure out what is actually going to produce the best results, customized to your specific needs.
